What normally happens is that the instructor will post the material as well as the assignments to this site and there normally will also be a bulletin board where the students can discuss the topic or post any questions they might have for the instructor. The Pros and Cons of learning online

learning onlineMost people who are in the nursing profession don’t have the flexibility to take time out of their busy careers to pursue a degree. For this reason, online courses have that appeal. It gives you the opportunity to become a nurse or higher without having to sit in a classroom all day. But there some pros and cons to this.

A few of these nursing programs allow you to take this course online or as distance learning classes. Most of these programs usually need you to do a lot of self-study classes and you need to be able to demonstrate the aptitude for clinical competence. There are also a lot of online courses where you can pursue your Bachelor of Science degree online.

The time it takes to do a degree online is dependent on the degree that you have chosen. To become an RN you need to have at least an Associate’s degree, which takes two years to complete. There are some local schools that offer such courses as well but these take longer than two years to complete. Online RN to BSN programs can take as little as a year or two years to complete. Two years is also the average if you want to do a Masters degree.

The most obvious pro to online degrees are that you don’t have to be in a class the whole day. Another pro to this is that you can even pursue it on the side while you are working which is what a lot of nurses do now. If you are the kind that doesn’t like to be stuck in a classroom all day and you have the inclination to be disciplined enough to follow through, then online courses may be your thing.

One of the biggest cons of online courses is that you cannot complete the whole thing from the comfort of your home. Any accredited nursing program requires that you put in a certain number of clinical hours in a medical facility. Online programs that are based regionally can place you in a medical facility for this. Online RN to BSN programs usually will require that you complete particular exercises at their places of employment rather than those of your choice. Only then will they sign off on your degree. So no matter what your current degree is, online courses have something to offer to everyone.

A Nurse’s diary

I am a Licensed Practical nurse (LPN).  I got into this job with the purpose of serving humankind.  I was always interested in taking care of others and it is this quality of mine that made me to go for a LPN course.  Another reason was that it was practically a one year course and I would be earning soon after the course. After my training in supervised patient care, I was ready for the job.  I joined a hospital nearby and was very happy.  I was earning, and I was employed. My joy knew no bounds.

The first day at the hospital was very hectic.  I had to work in different settings.  While I checked the pressure and temperature in one ward, I had to run to another ward for giving injections, dressing wounds and administering medication.  Then again I was called to assist patients with eating and exercising while some needed help with bathing.  I think I needed more than a pair hands and legs to be at different places at the same time.  My head nurse trusted me a lot and she gave me all the duties of taking care of the patients and maintaining of the records.  She needed to discuss with the doctors regarding the patients and relied on me for attending to the patient’s needs. It was stressful but I enjoyed my work.  Many patients loved me and spent quality time with me.

But days of the same routine left me exhausted.  After a day’s work I just wanted to sleep and sleep.  I had no time for friends, family, or outings.  I became irritable.  I thought patients didn’t bother about me.  Sometimes they were selfish, and demanding.  They were paying huge hospital bills and they expected us to be their servants.  I really wished now that I was a registered practical nurse.  My head nurse understood my dilemma.  She was very helpful.  She asked me to shift to a clinic or a home where I would feel less stressful.  Taking care of old patients also needs patience but you need to take care of only one family at a time.  And this way I would have lots of free time left.  I decided immediately to resume my studies to become a registered practical nurse.  With online courses, getting an RPN license is not a bother.  Now, thanks to the help of my head nurse and other friends and relatives I have become an RPN with more responsibility but with satisfaction
