Most people who are in the nursing profession don’t have the flexibility to take time out of their busy careers to pursue a degree. For this reason, online courses have that appeal. It gives you the opportunity to become a nurse or higher without having to sit in a classroom all day. But there some pros and cons to this.
A few of these nursing programs allow you to take this course online or as distance learning classes. Most of these programs usually need you to do a lot of self-study classes and you need to be able to demonstrate the aptitude for clinical competence. There are also a lot of online courses where you can pursue your Bachelor of Science degree online.
The time it takes to do a degree online is dependent on the degree that you have chosen. To become an RN you need to have at least an Associate’s degree, which takes two years to complete. There are some local schools that offer such courses as well but these take longer than two years to complete. Online RN to BSN programs can take as little as a year or two years to complete. Two years is also the average if you want to do a Masters degree.
The most obvious pro to online degrees are that you don’t have to be in a class the whole day. Another pro to this is that you can even pursue it on the side while you are working which is what a lot of nurses do now. If you are the kind that doesn’t like to be stuck in a classroom all day and you have the inclination to be disciplined enough to follow through, then online courses may be your thing.
One of the biggest cons of online courses is that you cannot complete the whole thing from the comfort of your home. Any accredited nursing program requires that you put in a certain number of clinical hours in a medical facility. Online programs that are based regionally can place you in a medical facility for this. Online RN to BSN programs usually will require that you complete particular exercises at their places of employment rather than those of your choice. Only then will they sign off on your degree. So no matter what your current degree is, online courses have something to offer to everyone.
